Our Journey Into Songwriting

Do you love stories?
I do.
Do you sing along with your favorite songs day and night?
I try.
Do you hack away at an instrument?
I’ve been pickin away at guitar for years.
Know a few chords on guitar or maybe can get around C major on the piano?
I am actually a fairly accomplished jazz pianist living in New York (more on that below).
Have you dreamed of writing songs?
YES.
Not making an album or touring or getting signed to a label…just you have always wanted to write a song?
I HAVE.
You want to sit down and sing and play a song that you, yourself wrote. Period.
Yup…I do.

If this has always felt out of reach, then you are in the right place.

Songwriting has always been a mystery to me as well.

Actually both singing and writing have both kinda seemed mysterious, difficult, meant for others to do. Problem is, I have always wanted to write songs. I have always wanted to sit at the piano and sing and play for others my songs. Never have, though.

I have never shared a song with the world.

Here is the funny thing, I have spent my adult life making music and playing music. TONS of music. I am a jazz pianist by trade but have spent a chunk of my life composing music for TV (wrote for Oprah for seven years) and even arranging for big bands and chamber ensembles. Yup, I have spent a whole lot of time around song writers, singers, accompanying them or supporting them in the studio, yet I never really considered myself qualified to be one of them. Funny, weird, and kind of sad, I know.

I have always counted myself out, until now.

That is all changing right here and right now with SongWriteDaily.com. This is a place for me to discover my songwriting self and I invite you to join me to do the same with your songwriting self.

Join me on a journey & start singing and playing your own songs TODAY.

Seriously…if I can face my song writing demons, so can you. And I mean NOW. I don’t mean someday, I’m talkng about today is the start of your new songwriting self, OUR songwriting self. I’m here to share my journey into uncharted (and pretty terrifying) territory. I’ll share all I learn along the way and even my attempts at writing. And I’ll challenge you to do the same.

Life is way too short to keep something as important as writing and sharing your own stories for another time. Songs are a magical way to tell the world about what matters to us. Tell the world about our version of love, loss, politics, passion, and parents. Or whatever we choose to share. But share we must!

SongWriteDaily.com is a simple solution to helping me (and you) get over the fear of failure. If I share both the challenges and successes (right from the beginning) and do it in the most public way,  then I face the biggest hurdle..worrying about whether or not I get it perfect. Why? Because getting it perfect is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT.

Just doing it, day in and day out is actually what matters.

Doing the work of trying, assessing, studying, and trying again is the point of SongWriteDaily.com. I am not looking to become the next Bob Dylan or Coldplay, I am just looking to discover myself in a deeper way through songwriting.

I am looking for me through a totally new kind of exploration, songwriting.

Join me in finding your voice.

I have spent my life learning and applying those lessons to a career in music and I plan to use those very same skills with decoding songwriting. I view everything in life like one huge puzzle and depending on my patience and fortitude, I try to tackle it one piece at a time time.

Songwriting is gonna be my latest puzzle to solve & I’m ready and willing to help you along the way….as best I can.

Along the way, here is what I will share:
1-All the tools that I find super helpful. Apps, software, etc. (I LOVE technology & use it tons in my teaching and studying)
2-My attempts, both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ at actually writing. (I will share what I write and dissect the songs so you can borrow ideas for your own work)
3-Any study guides, books, articles, websites, blogs, etc. that I find to be valuable and inspiring. (I read loads of books on learning, music, songwriting, etc.)
4-Songwriters that I have found to be inspiring, helpful with my quest, and above all…are amazing story tellers.

Welcome to the journy and thanks for joining me. You are a fearless soul.
